SEVEN pupils from four local primary schools got treats and a chat with their MP at a Callington supermarket.

Sheryl Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, met children from Gunnislake Primary , Harrowbarrow, St Dominic and St Mellion schools at Tesco to celebrate the 20th year of the Tesco for Schools and Clubs Scheme.

As well as a goodie bag of equipment for each school, the youngsters enjoyed home-made fairy cakes and a surprise gift each.

The nationwide scheme enables UK schools and clubs to redeem vouchers from Tesco purchases for equipment to benefit and educate children. Last year the supermarket group gave away £9.3-million worth of equipment to schools and clubs.

Mrs Murray said: 'The Tesco Schools and Clubs Scheme is a brilliant initiative in providing much needed extra equipment for our local schools.

'I am delighted that the primary schools were able to benefit from the scheme and would like to thank Tesco at Callington for working so hard to benefit the local community.'

Store manager Gary Wills said: 'So many of our customers have been collecting vouchers to help local schools and clubs get new equipment. It shows what can happen when the whole community gets involved, and we are proud to be a part of it.'
