Whitchurch v Yelverton

ON a surprisingly sunny afternoon, Whitchurch entertained Yelverton, hoping to put their recent poor run behind them.

Their case was not helped by five first team regulars being unavailable.

Having won the toss, Yelverton were put in to bat on a glorious batting track. With Lavis (1-24) and fourteen-year-old Jack Newton (0-24) bowling well in tandem Yelverton were immediately under pressure.

Their scoring was pedestrian, but Whitchurch were finding wickets hard to come by. It was only when the enthusiastic Stokes (3-35) came on that wickets started to fall.

With Mills (1-47) again receiving some harsh treatment, the scoring picked up towards the end of the innings with only Compton (59) making any inroads into the bowling.

Yelverton finished on 192-7.

In reply, with their batting order severely depleted, Whitchurch set about just trying to bat the 46 overs. With very little control in line and length, the Yelverton bowlers were being regularly hit to the boundary.

Skipper Chappell (52) led from the front with Gray not to be outdone scoring 56. When these two fell the result was never in doubt as Mansfield (36no) and man of the match Stokes (29no) saw Whitchurch home to 195-3, comfortably winning by seven wickets.

Whitchurch take 18 points and Yelverton 5.

This week in their final game of the season, Whitchurch travel to Chagford.
