OKEHAMPTON Royal British Legion members will be among those travelling to the Bath and West Show to take part in a grand parade on Saturday, June 5, to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day ? and there are still some spare seats available to anyone who wishes to attend the event.

James Stacey, from Halwill ? one of the youngest standard bearers in the country ? will be carrying the Okehampton branch standard as part of the parade.

Legion contingents from all parts of the south west of England, numbering several hundred, will march to the main arena at the Bath and West Show at Shepton Mallet, Somerset, at about 4.30pm on June 5.

The Wellington Band of the King?s Division will provide the music to mark the momentous anniversary of the landings of the allied armies on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944.

Many of those on parade will be veterans of the second world war and in particular of the Normandy campaign, which lasted until the end of August 1944.

The D-Day offensive was the start of the long and bitter advance to liberate the occupied countries and bring peace to Europe.

A coach has been arranged to take Royal British Legion members and their dependents to the show.

However, there are still some spare seats and these are being made available to anyone ? not necessarily a member of the Royal British Legion ? who would like to visit the show.

The cost will be £5 per person. Non-Royal British Legion members will naturally have to pay their entry fee to the show itself.

The coach will leave from Fore Street, outside More Newsagent, at 9.30am on Saturday June 5 and should return to Okehampton at approximately 8pm.

Call the branch secretary on 01837 840757 to book a seat.
