Jewson South Western League

Tavistock 2

Millbrook 1

THIS penultimate home game for the Lambs was brought forward from Saturday to enable them an extra day's rest prior to the Jewson South League Cup Final on Bank Holiday Monday.

Darren Babb was forced to miss the game due to illness and Craig Hodge replaced him in defence. Tavistock got off to almost the perfect start when from a James Cole cross Jeff Babb brought out the best in ex Lambs keeper Matt Usher with a diving save.

Millbrook had the better of the opening exchanges but the Lambs stung them in the 28th minute against the run of play. A through-ball found Babb who shrugged off the challenge of a defender and coolly chipped Usher with the ball going in off the post.

The second half got off to a lively start. Lambs keeper Andy Meeds did well to push away a Millbrook free kick. Peter Tiffney came on for the injured Marcus Crocker and with his first touch was away on goal but Usher did well to come out and save at the striker's feet.

Tavistock increased their lead on 67 minutes. Cole's free kick was controlled by Babb on the edge of the box to turn sharply and drill the ball low to Usher's right.

Five minutes later Millbrook were back in it when they were awarded a penalty and Lee Cansfield converted.

It set up an exciting last 18 minutes with both sides going close but the Lambs held out despite Millbrook rattling the crossbar in the sixth minute of injury time.

It keeps the Lambs in seventh position in the league and will probably be the highest finishing place for a decade.

Just three games to go and they could not be more difficult. Home and away to title contenders St Blazey, and the last game of the season sees the Lambs make the long journey to Porthleven on Sunday May 14.
