Bodmin Trophies Duchy League Division Two

Lamerton . . . . . . . . . . . 4

Menheniot . . . . . . . . . . .2

LAMERTON entertained Menheniot in a league game which had everything and was a joy to watch for the neutral supporters.

The game was played at a fast pace and was evenly contested early on. Paul Cowling?s pace was a constant threat to the visitors? defence but the home side couldn?t get that important first goal.

Menheniot opened the scoring when a corner ball was played low across the goal line and turned in for an own goal.

Five minutes later the lead was doubled when Mark Hoskins beat the keeper following some slack defending and a dubious decision from the home linesman.

With their backs to the wall Lamerton pulled back one goal before halftime when Cowling beat the offside trap and unselfishly rolled the ball across for Paul Breyley to sidefoot home.

The second half saw Lamerton begin to dominate and they went level when a poor clearance from the visitors? keeper was knocked back into Cowling?s path and he put the ball away with ease.

The lead came when the same player looped the ball over the keeper and into the net.

But the drama was far from over. From one of their less frequent attacks Menheniot were awarded a disputed penalty but Hoskins put the ball wide and shortly afterwards Zak Beesley headed a goal bound shot off the line.

As the game wore on Lamerton were thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping. It was left to Steve Wickett to wrap the game up by challenging the keeper for a 50/50 ball and walking it into the net. It is obvious that life in Division 2 will be a far greater challenge for Lamerton this season.

This Saturday away to Lifton in a friendly in memory of Sid Ball. ( k.o.12.30 pm).
