THE third round of the South West of England Winter Foursomes competition, was finally played at Yelverton, after three successive delays due to rain, frost and snow.
The reigning champions, George Frude and Chris Gunn, lost to fellow Yelverton players Steve Allum and David Wright. The match was decided on the 19th hole when Steve Allum hit his tee shot to 15 feet, and their opponents missed the green.
Paul Hendy and Mark Blaber(Yelverton) had another convincing win, 5 and 3, over Ben Isaac and Jack Money while Andy Frankum and Ken Ware (Crediton) also had a convincing win, 5 and 3, over Peter Clapp and Darren Ward (Yelverton).
Chris Gill, just back from the Asian Tour, and his partner Ryan Pope (Exeter) had a close match against David Turnbull (Yelverton) and Kenny Mackenzie (Tavistock). They won the last two holes to progress.
Yelverton juniors Dan Rosevear and James Smith played well to beat professional Jack Wallace and his partner Andrew Place (Staddon) 4 and 2.
Professional Ashley Moon(Okehampton) and his brother Martin, were also successful.
In the fourth round the professionals will all meet amateur opponents from the home club Yelverton. Chris Gill and partner will face Yelverton's Gary Hawking and Karl Eastwood; Duncan Arnold will play Steve Allum and Dave Wright, and Jason Pollard will play Kevin Blaber and Wayne Tulley.
The plate competition, for first round losers, will see its the quarter-finals on Sunday, March 7, to coincide with the main competition quarter-finals. Full start times are available on the Yelverton Golf Club website at yelvertongolf.co.uk.
