Bodmin Trophies Duchy division 2
North Hill 1
Mary Tavy 2
WITH both teams rising from Duchy 4 to the second division in consecutive seasons there was always going to be some rivalry.
The game was played at a good pace and although competitive to the extreme both teams to their credit displayed a sporting spectacle.
With only one league game behind them due to cup fixtures Mary Tavy took time to settle. This gave the home side the edge in the early stages and Tavy did well to hold out.
Chris Hurford made his return to the Tavy goal after an eight-month lay-off and showed he had lost none of his previous good form.
Tavy started the ball rolling when against the run of play Ben Stephens headed the opener after a fine flick on from Philpotts — this kept up Stephens' record of scoring in every match so far this season.
The visitors settled and were awarded a series of corners. Dan Brockington stepped up to take one and saw his sweeping effort curl in at the back post. North Hill piled on the pressure and were rewarded their just desserts as they found the Tavy net to make it 2-1.
End to end stuff saw North Hill denied the equaliser from a free kick because of handball.
The second half saw numerous chances but with Tavy applying the offside rule to some effect none of those led to any changes in the scoreline.
Man of the match: Matt Dudley.
