THE letter from Devon Senior Voice (November 8) is somewhat flawed itself! The fact that one commissioner replaces 19 unelected people who are empowered to raise taxes through the council tax precept is a step in the right direction.

Unelected bodies should not be allowed to raise taxes. The 19 met in private and doubtless had a very cosy relationship with the chief constable. One year they raised the precept by a staggering 35%. Yet the electorate had no voice. Now they have.

The commissioner, whoever he or she may be, will have to do what is right for the majority or face removal at the polls. In turn, the chief constable will have to take note of what the commissioner requires or face the sack. With the so called 19 this could not happen and in any case the 19 did not sit there for nothing. Perhaps one day we may all be able to elect the chief constable. Now that really would be a step in the right direction.
