THE town centre will be alive with the treasures of yesteryear on Sunday (June 5) when Tavistock Steam Fair turns the clock back with a first class display of vintage vehicles. Organised by the Robey Trust, this year it is hoped to have the first steam roller Robey and Co built in 1913 back in steam after 25 years. Classic cars and motorcycles will be on display in the Guildhall car park and along town centre streets. Robey Trust spokesman John Turner said: ?There is also the possibility that the town may be brought to a standstill by a visiting gun carrier. ?That is one of the exhibits that remind us of the debt we owe those who fought for our country 60 years ago.? John said one of the most popular attractions would be the preserved steam engines which would be driving around the town and providing trailer rides. ?Vintage tractors will provide a splash of colour as they parade on their way out and back from the Frank Roffey Tractor Trail,? he said. This is a road run that takes the tractors to three venues outside the town and back in time for the mayor?s official opening on the steam fair at 2pm. Smaller exhibits will be on show in the pannier market where the Collection of Collections will be presented. ?All manner of interesting displays are expected, from models made from matchsticks to hot air engines,? said John. There will also be a superb diorama featuring the battle and liberation of Carentan in Normandy. This year, for the first time, there will be a model railway exhibition in Tavistock Town Hall. It will feature many aspects of railway modelling in various scales including a large ?G? scale layout. Providing the real thing in miniature outside will be a mini steam train giving rides. Tavistock Steam Fair opens at 11am. The Robey Trust, which is based in Pixon Lane, Tavistock, is a registered charity with origins going back more than 20 years. It cares for an internationally important collection of steam engines and equipment and encourages apprentices to become involved in the restoration and maintenance of the collection.
