CHAGFORD will be celebrating the 700th anniversary of the granting of the Stannary Charter to the town on Sunday (April 10). A charter of King Edward I, dated April 10, 1305, granted the towns of Chagford, Ashburton and Tavistock and their Cornish counterparts cherished privileges and right. The other Devon towns will also be celebrating their long and proud history, together with Plympton at a later date. In Chagford there will be a special Stannary Civic Service at the parish church of St Michael the Archangel at 11am, to which everyone is invited. The service will give thanks to the town?s forebears and will provide an opportunity for residents to rejoice in their town. A spokesperson said the town was ?still a beautiful and bustling place, a place of inspiration and creation?. The service will be followed by refreshments in the Jubilee Hall, where a special exhibition will be mounted by the local history society.
