AFTER a great deal of discussion and thought with my wife, Christine and family, I have decided after 24 years as a county councillor, and having fought six elections undefeated, to stand down and am not contesting my seat at this election. During that time I have been on many county council committees, also serving on Dartmoor National Park Authority, six years as vice-chairman, nine years as chairman until June. The people of the constituency have always been the ones that count to me and I still believe party political councillors do not achieve as much as an independent councillor, but I realise that seems to be the real world. I am not sure if my enthusiasm and energy will allow me to serve people fully for another four years. I feel Christine and I can now spend more time with our two daughters and new granddaughter. I hope people feel I have achieved something for their community over the last 24 years. I have always tried to put 100% effort into representing the people of the constituency I thank everyone who has loyally supported me during my time in office. County Cllr Bill Cann (Hatherleigh and Chagford)
