MOVE over Jamie Oliver — people in the Tavistock area will soon be able to buy a new cookery book with some great recipes — and raise cash for charity at the same time.
The Pannier Market Recipe Book will contain the favourite dishes of stallholders in the Tavistock market and will have an introduction by master chef Peter Gorton of the Horn of Plenty.
The book idea was dreamed up by former stallholder Jan Nowak — she will compile and edit the recipes, helped by the market's Shaun McDermott, of Pens and Moor.
Jan said: 'I hope the idea of the book will get some more community spirit going in the market, with everyone working together and creating a good atmosphere.
'It's about the market traders doing something together, having a bit of fun and enjoyment and doing something to increase the market identity and have something to be proud of.'
Mike Souttar, the deputy market reeve, said: 'There's a lot of enthusiasm for the idea, and we have a lot of different nationalities in the market — we've got Finnish, Spanish, Polish, African, Norwegian, South African — a real cross-section, so there should be some really different recipes. There's been a really good response so far.'
All the stallholders have been asked to submit their own favourite recipes by April. They may be sweet or savoury, seasonal, vegetarian, for children, for parties or any special occasion.
With some 200 regular stallholders attending Tavistock Pannier Market throughout the month, there should be plenty of ideas to browse through.
The book will be illustrated with photographs and should be available in the summer.
Mr Souttar said proceeds from the sales of the book will be donated to Children's Hospice South West and St Luke's Hospice — it is hoped the book will also be marketed through the hospice shops in the area, as well as being available in the pannier market itself.
'Apart from raising money for the charities, it should be a tremendous advertisement for the pannier market itself, by remaining in people's homes for years to come,' said Mike.
'When the book is completed I will ask Peter Gorton to decide the best recipes in each category, and the winners will receive a certificate from a master chef for display on their stall,' he said.
It is also hoped the winning recipes will be cooked at a special food market being held in Tavistock on October 31.
