A NEW information service has got under way in Tavistock, designed to make the most of community transport in the area.

Tavistock Local Transport Partnership has appointed two full-time co-ordinators who will man an information line, encouraging community transport providers to work in partnership when serving the public.

Tavistock LTP is part of West Devon's Rural Transport Partnership, which aims to identify local transport needs and work towards practical solutions.

Sonia Burgess, development officer for WDRTP, said: 'The local transport co-ordinators will provide an excellent source of information about what it is the local community wants and needs with regard to transport.'

Peta Humphries, a committee representative of the LTP, said: 'This is a very exciting new service which aims to provide local community groups, and indeed the public, with help to meet their transport needs.

'I would urge any community group whose activities are limited because of lack of transport to contact Wendy or Diane, our local co-ordinators.'

Newly appointed co-ordinator Diane Nancholas, said: 'I am looking forward to working in the community and promoting this new transport partnership.

Wendy Pocknell will work with Diane and also continue to operate the ring and ride service.

She said: 'The ring and ride service is now part of the local transport partnership.

'This is an incredibly valuable community transport service which gives freedom to people who cannot easily use public transport.

Tavistock LTP is based at the Anchorage Centre in Tavistock. The service will be available from 9am until 5pm, Monday to Friday on Tavistock 01822 618028.
