A memorial plaque was unveiled at Morwellham Quay at the weekend in commemoration of one of its workers who died just before Christmas.

Jason Fiander, who lived in Albaston and who’s family comes from Bere Alston, spent a lot of time working on the restoration of a number of the buildings at the visitor attraction. He died unexpectedly at the end of November, aged 30.

His stepfather Bob Koshti said: ‘My son died just before Christmas. He did a lot of work at Morwellham and they agreed to put up a plaque for him.

‘He was very well liked — about 300 people came to his funeral the week before Christmas. The vicar said he had never seen the church so packed.’

On Sunday, friends, family and co-workers gathered to see the memorial plaque in place outside the sweet shop.

Morwellham Quay owner George Lister said: ‘Jason did a lot of work helping to restore the buildings and took part in a big restoration on one of the roofs so he spent a lot of time here.

‘His death was very sad for his family, friends and his children — he died too young. His family asked if we could put up a plaque — I was quite friendly with him so I thought it was a good idea. We have placed the plaque down on the sweet shop, which is one of the buildings he worked on.’
