NATIONAL Squash Week at the Okehampton club was a great success.
The event was run throughout the country and Okehampton Squash Club organised a handicap tournament for enthusiasts which was very successful.
The finals were held on Sunday. The plate final was between Alec Anderson and Jon Harwood and after a week of squash they still found the energy to but up a good performance.
Alec defeated his younger opponent 3.0 but Jon, aged 12, is an up and coming junior player and did extremely well against a stronger opponent, losing 15/10 15/11, 15/13.
The main event was between Arnie Searle and Ben Jones and went all the way, Arnie taking the first game 15/9, Ben taking the second 15/14 and finally Arnie defeating Ben in the fifth 15/13. It was an excellent final with many long hard rallies.
The club?s ladies? team defeated West Country three matches to two, Jill Bozier going down at 5 0.3, Kathy Bolt winning 3.0, Deborah Cunningham having a tough match, just losing in the fifth, Kirstin Taylor coming through comfortably to take the match 3.1 and Sue Stanbury winning easily at 1 3.0. Okehampton ladies won by 16 points to seven
