George Belli Cup round 2

Newton Spurs Res 0

Chagford 4

CHAGFORD, in learning the art of defending a lead, blew their opponents away in a scintillating first half and determined second.

Assistant manager, Dave Endacott, pulled on the 'keeper's shirt owing to Saul Scarry being ruled out through injury; defender Warwick Botham was struck down by the flu and a couple of other key players were unavailable.

Chagford took the game to their hosts and were dominant, particularly down their right flank. Chadwick and Davis linked well with Miller a willing runner in support.

It was this combination that bore fruit for the opener, Chadwick crossing superbly for Miller to nod down the ball, Mark Williams picking his spot with his own header.

Two minutes later, Robbie Miller was put in by Davis, who had been sent clear by Chadwick, and finished calmly.

Spurs started to claw their way back but were thwarted by a defence commanded by Endacott, Johnston and Brown. This, coupled with the determination of Forsey, allowed Hutchison and Davis to link more often with Williams, Potter and de Cruz. It was de Cruz who was to hammer in Chagford's third, picking up Forsey's knock down and firing in off the bar.

Five minutes later and two from the break, Potter ran on to Williams' through ball and out-witted the 'keeper for a deserved goal.

Almost game over at the re-start but Newton refused to lay down and, after a near miss from Miller, they raised their game and rejigged their own side. Younger legs created better chances but the visitors' defence was in no mood to give up their lead.

Newton's Adam Carter was dismissed for the quickest two yellow cards seen for a long time.

Chris Woof eventually took over from the injured Hutchison and Chagford saw out the game back in the ascendancy.

This was a well won result and powered Chagford into the semi-finals. At the time of writing, this week's opponents are yet to be made known.

Ivor Andrews Cup round 2

Chagford Res 0

Marldon Res 1

CHAGFORD felt confident, prior to this match, of making their way through but surprisingly fell to a side they'd already beaten in the league.

Due to first team call-ups changes had to be made, but the players coming in were of suitable quality to gather a result. So it was, the hosts were dominant from the start but went a goal down midway through the half, against the run of play.

Chagford's midfield allowed Marldon to play through them and the defence failed to deal with problem, paying the price dearly.

From there on, Chagford forced the pace but could find no way in on goal. Some fortunate defending and goalkeeping also kept their forwards at bay, as chances came and went.

This being the last cup chance, the Reserves will return to league action for their next match.
