MEMBERS of the Ockment Rivers Improvement Group had it 'in the bag' last week, when they took part in their monthly river clean up in Okehampton. There was certainly no danger of missing the environmentally friendly volunteers because, as a shining example to the community, they were donning bright, luminous jackets donated by Essex Industrial Supplies of Grays to help them in their work. They tidied up plastic bottles, sandwich wrappers and supermarket bags which littered the riverside from West Ockment Bridge to the confluence and upto the Ockment Centre. Cllr Christine Marsh, who is chairman of ORIG, said: 'Thanks to an appeal for people to join us in the Times, we had four new volunteers join us, which we were very pleased with. 'We all went away feeling that we achieved something. 'I also would like to thank Waitrose and Somerfield superstores in Okehampton for disposing of the rubbish we collected.' ORIG meet every last Saturday of the month at 10am by the recycling bins at Waitrose car park in Okehampton. New members are always welcome to come along on the day and join in this community project.
