THE lack of play space for young people within residential areas in Okehampton has been identified as a key concern by a project aiming to shape the future of the town?s living and built environment.

Work so far from the Okehampton Design Statement Group project will be going on display later this month, to get feedback on the project.

The group, made up of local residents, are putting their initial findings on display in the Market Hall foyer (Red Lion Yard Entrance), Okehampton from June 19-25.

The lack of informal and formal play space for all age groups, within residential areas has been identified by the group as a key issue.

Nils Westman, of the project said: ?It is clear to the group that the NPFA?s (National Playing Fields Association) six acre standard for playing space per 1,000 residents is not being met, along with other standards for natural greenspace within reasonable walking distance of local neighbourhoods.?

The group also has concerns, like many local residents, about the loss of facilities such as the cinema and other important community venues.

The group has referred to a wide range of information about the town, including Peter Woodgate?s Concept Plan for the town council, West Devon Borough Council?s Conservation Area appraisal and local plan.

Based on this work, the town design statement will describe the town?s character and recommend ways of developing the built environment and giving greater validity to the interests of local people within the formal planning process.
