WORKS will be undertaken in the next few weeks to repair the damaged surface within the area of open space off Pixon Lane in Tavistock.

The issue over the poor condition of the surface area outside the scout hut and rifle range came to the attention of Tavistock Town Council, which owns the land, by concerned residents and members of the Tavistock Scout Group.

In a letter to the council Rob Macormac, chairman of the 1st Tavistock Scout Group, urged that something permanent be done to the surface of the area, which is locally known as the cattle market car park.

'Parents have complained to us about the state of the surface and ask who would be responsible for damage to their vehicles by the potholes and hidden kerb side.

'I have to say on one occasion, some of the potholes were topped up but with the first downpour, for which Tavistock is famous, they all became their old selves, only filled with water.

'We understand there are financial constraints on the council's coffers, but in the three to four years I have been chairman and the number of communications from the former chairman, one attempt at filling in some of the potholes is a poor response to our request.'

At a full council meeting last week, members discussed the request.

Wayne Southall, general manager for the town council, told councillors that the area had been maintained approximately ten times in the past three years.

Cllr Jeff Moody said: 'The scout hut is used heavily and the pot holes have been horrendous.

'Just out of a community minded attitude it would be good if we could sort this out as a goodwill gesture.'

Members agreed that scheduled maintenance be completed in the next few weeks.
