THERE'S not many people when they retire who are awarded a Scottish title but its an honour which has been 'bestowed' on a Tavistock teacher.
Ashley Tossell, Tavistock College's head of physical education, was given more than best wishes by staff and students when he retired from the school after 31 year of service.
He was presented with a certificate pronouncing him 'Laird Ashley of Lochabar' to become owner of a plot of land on an estate near Glencoe in Scotland. Other gifts to the former Tavistock AFC and Tavistock Rugby Club player included a limited edition book on Tottenham Hotspur and England star Jimmy Greaves, signed by Spurs legends Dave Mackay and Steve Perryman.
As a sportsman Ashley has represented his county at rugby, football and athletics and competed in three All England Athletic Championships.
The popular teacher, aged 53, said he was very pleased with all the gifts he has received but is a little worried by his Christmas present from his wife Carolyn — a Dyson vacuum cleaner!
Of his time at Tavistock College he said: 'I have loved every moment of it. I've been very lucky to do a job which I wanted to do since the age of 13 — and not many people can say that. I've met so many people and there's probably not many people under the age of 48 in the town who I haven't taught. I love the school and have just been fortunate to meet so many lovely people.'
Born in Redruth, Cornwall, he took his teaching degree at the College of Mark and St John in Plymouth. He started at Tavistock College at Easter 1978 and was only meant to teach there for six weeks as a stand in for a teacher who pulled a ligament. He has been head of physical education there for 19 years and was in charge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the Residential Experience at the school. Ashley has also conducted his 'Tossell Tours' — taking pupils to trips in France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Holland.
It was also at the school that he met his wife Carolyn, who was then head of Spanish and is now herself, assistant principal. They have two children, Natalie and Barney.
Colin Eves, the college principal, praised and thanked Ashley for all he has done for the college, said: 'We are very grateful for all that Ashley has done over his 30 years and two terms here at Tavistock College.
'He has encouraged so many young people to take part in sport and his enthusiasm, interest and commitment have not only been a benefit to the college but also the whole community. We wish him a very happy and deserved retirement.'
