A FESTIVAL of sport for all ages and abilities is due to take place in Okehampton this month, when the town?s annual sports festival lifts off on Saturday. The event has now been running for eight years and each year, more and more activities are staged. Stuart Lord of Ocra, who has organised the festival, said: ?It just grows year on year. With more and more people wanting to get involved, more and more teams entering the events ? it creates a real community buzz. ?Last year, more than 1,200 people took part in the week, of all ages. The aim is to get as many people as possible having a go at something ? and all the clubs really respond to it as well.? Stuart said the theme of this year?s festival is ?Something for Everyone? and an impressive array of new events has been added to the programme for 2006. There are dance sessions including street, salsa, ballet, jazz and belly dancing, a surf experience session run in conjunction with the Youth Hostel at Bude, water polo, in-line skate hockey, trampolining and cycling including bike hire, timed trials and a ladies ride. There are a wide range of taster sessions including judo, badminton, fencing, archery and athletics. Top coaches from Plymouth Albion will be passing on their tips to rugby players from year 6 to colts level and there is a special Arsenal Soccer Camp for footballers who have been inspired by the World Cup. There is also a range of tournaments, from squash and netball to rounders, plus five-a-side football competitions and putting competitions. The events are held in and around Okehampton throughout the week ? and the majority of them are free. The week culminates with the ?Super Sporting Sunday? in Simmons Park, which includes the five-a-side football competition, a hockey day, tennis, putting, inline skate hockey and water polo. There will also be a free swimming session at Parklands for children and adults, plus music, food and a bar. Copies of the packed programme of events at this year?s Sports and Fitness Festival, which has been funded by Ocra, local businesses and the town council, are available from Freedom Sports and Red Lion Bazaar.
