WHITCHURCH Wayfarers Cricket Club?s annual Mansbridge and Balment sponsored cricket week was a great success with only one game being affected by the rain. July 31 saw the visit of Cornwall over 50s ? only one hour?s play was possible when rain interrupted proceedings, but the visitors enjoyed their short stay and have agreed to return next year. The weather improved for the rest of the week and games were played against Harrow St Mary on the Tuesday, Elephant?s Nest on the Wednesday, Ryde IOW on the Thursday and Lewdown on the Saturday. In the game against Ryde, the visitors batted first and scored 180 all out with Jez Stokes taking 4 for 28 being the pick of the bowlers. In reply, Tom Jackson scored 60, Nigel Barriball 27 and Ian Gray 27 chipped in to produce a two-wicket win for the home side. The club hosted the over 50s county match between Devon and Cornwall on Sunday August 6, with Devon winning a close match. Both sets of county officials were full of praise for Whitchurch CC?s preparation and hospitality. The club expressed thanks to all those within the club who worked so hard to make the week a success and to Mansbridge and Balment.
