WHAT a fantastic weekend the 70th celebrations at Harrowbeer Airfield were. The whole event was so well organised, even the weather was perfect. It was great to see various people dressed in the 40s style.
The opening of one of the air raid shelters brought back the fear and memories of so many endless nights spent as a 4/5 year old in our shelter, partly buried in the back garden during the blitz on Plymouth — I even saw a spider sac hanging from the roof! How odd to think the dog-fights we witnessed overhead might well have involved planes from Yelverton, where I have now been living for over 30 years!
The fly-past was the icing on the cake; thank you and well done to all concerned. We were certainly aware of and re-lived the bravery of the men and women who manned the airfield during those awful times and by doing so made it possible for people like me to write a letter like this.
I do hope they re-couped the costs of setting up this splendid tribute to our heroes.
Ted Whitehead, Yelverton
