Yelverton Bohemians Spitfires (U9s cricket team) began at the start of the 2006 season with only four players at the first practice ? but such is their success they now have 25 members. The youngest player is just four years old and the eldest nine with the majority of the players coming from Meavy, Buckland or Widewell primary schools. The players chose their own name by picking Spitfires from a list of fighter planes that were based at Yelverton during the Second World War. The side is sponsored by local builders Farnham Bros. (Youldon & Barrett Ltd.) The Spitfires meet every Friday evening between 6pm and 7.30pm. Each session begins with a warm-up activity followed by the practising of a fielding, batting or bowling skill and always ends in a game. All the players recently passed the ECB Kwik Cricket Bronze award that tests a player?s ability in close catching, under arm bowling and driving straight off a ?tee? and were presented with their certificates and badges by Yelverton 1st XI skipper Rob Guy. On 15th July (10.30-12.30) The Spitfires will compete in a kwik cricket tournament at Cornwood cricket club and will play against other U9 teams from Cornwood, Plympton and Ivybridge.
