A SPITFIRE from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is to give a short display over Yelverton's former world war two airfield, RAF Harrowbeer to mark an historic link between the base and a Brazilian organisation.
The display, on Friday October 16 at approximately 1pm, is to celebrate the wartime link between the Fellowship of the Bellows of Brazil and No 193 Squadron RAF, who were stationed at the airfield.
The date has been chosen because it is exactly 66 years since the Brazilian Ambassador came to the airfield to present the squadron with nine Hawker Typhoon aircraft which had been bought by the Fellowship for the RAF.
The Fellowship of the Bellows of Brazil was created by a group of ex-pats living in South America, who raised money to buy aircraft for the RAF.
Following the display, a commemorative plaque, offered by the Brazilian Air Force, will be unveiled at Knightstone Tea Rooms by the present Brazilian Air Attaché, Col Cesar Estevan Barbosa.
The plaque will be placed alongside the Harrowbeer Interest Group's interpretation board for the airfield.
The plaque is the idea of Mr Carlos Thompson Motta, from Brazil, who has been researching the history of the Bellows organisation.
He contacted the Harrowbeer Interest Group and with their help has brought his idea to fruition.
Members of the public are invited to attend the unveiling ceremony, which will be followed by a private reception for guests in the tea rooms.
No. 193 Squadron RAF were formed at RAF Harrowbeer in December 1942 and were eventually equipped with the then new Hawker Typhoon aircraft.
