EDF Energy Senior Vase round 2 South West Okehampton 7 Wadebridge Camels 25 OKEHAMPTON succumbed to a well organised and talented side, despite a spirited, if a little disjointed, display. Playing with a gentle breeze behind, on a slippery surface, Okehampton dominated the first half territorially, but due to lack of application failed to turn the advantage into points. Okehampton spurned their first opportunity when Harry Bushin pushed a kickable penalty wide of the posts after ten minutes, and were given a numerical advantage soon after, when the opposition full back was sin-binned for dissent. Spurred on by the large home crowd, Okehampton took advantage and, after a powerful drive by the forwards, Steve Alford dived over in the right corner. This try was converted immaculately by Ali Mason with a powerful toe poke. Despite playing virtually the whole half in Wadebridge territory, Okehampton could not add further points, and it was Wadebridge who finished the half the stronger side, and scored a penalty in front of the posts to make it 7-3 at half-time. The second half began in disastrous fashion for Okehampton with Wadebridge scoring a well worked converted try under the posts from their winger, after a good move. If Okehampton were to be in with a chance of victory, it was after this wake up call that they needed to improve, and they did, for the next 15 minutes, with veteran Dave Bickle playing at fly half, due to the injury of Brimmacombe, making good use of possession. All that changed midway through the half, when Wadebridge scored in the corner, following a catch and drive and added another soon after with a try straight from the training ground. Wadebridge took their foot off the gas but Okehampton failed to respond, and after losing young lock Sam Turner to the sin-bin for a marginal offence, they conceded another try five minutes before the end after lacklustre tackling allowed the Number 8 to crash over. With Okehampton now out of all cup competitions for this year, they can concentrate on galvanising their league position, starting next week when they play Honiton away in a rematch of the Devon Cup fixture earlier this year, when Okehampton narrowly lost.
