A TEENAGER from St Ann’s Chapel has organised a special event — where he will bravely have his legs waxed — all for charity.

Evan Fleming, a student at Callington College, has organised a quiz night at the Rifle Volunteer Inn tomorrow (Friday, October 6) to raise much needed funds for Kidney Care UK.

Evan, who turns 15 today (Thursday), was just three-years-old when he contracted HUS — Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome — a life-threatening complication that occurs in about 10% of those infected with E coli.

Evan was quickly sent to Bristol Children’s Hospital with kidney failure where he had to stay until he was three and a half years old.

Ever since that day, Evan has been watched closely by staff at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, to make sure his kidneys do not go in to decline.

Havers said that Evan has a positive attitude to the situation and amazes her every day at his strength to overcome what he has been through at a young age.

‘Evan stays fit and healthy and runs regularly at Tamar Trails and he knows he wants to be a marine biologist. He does worry whether he will one day need a transplant but he is always positive.

‘Since he has reached puberty his kidneys have gone into decline and after a recent consultation appointment he decided to not become negative and turned the situation in to a positive one and decided to raise money for charity.

‘He wanted to do something for a kidney charity so decided to raise money for Kidney Care UK and chose to hold a quiz as he loves quizzes and he even wrote it himself with his best friend.’

But, after the quiz comes the leg wax - and each wax strip will be auctioned off on the night.

‘He is dreading the wax,’ added Keely. ‘The auctioning off of each wax strip was his idea but he is dreading it now.’

The bidding of each strip will start at £5!

Keely added: ‘I am immensely proud of Evan, he always stays focussed and is strong and positive. He is laid back and I am the one that’s worried but he gets on with it and I am proud of his mature outlook on life.’

• The quiz is fully booked but if people want to donate funds they can go direct to the charity and make a donation in Evan’s name - www.kidneycareuk.org
