A SUCCESSFUL day was hosted recently by the Tavistock and District branch of the Embroiderers? Guild with members coming from all over the region. Members were warmly welcomed to Tavistock by mayor Caroline Keane and the president of the guild and past president of the broderers? company, Bill Sowerby. The audience enjoyed two instructive and entertaining lectures about making designer hats and traditional methods of spinning and dying wools for making historically accurate fabrics. Between lectures there were specialist stalls showing their wares of threads, fabrics and books to whet the appetite and the displays of work by talented adults and young embroiderers that had been entered in the competitions. The winners of the Tavistock prizes were chosen by the mayor and were awarded to Sylvia Horn, West Hants and Dorset branch and to the young embroiderer Lucy Churcher, Tavistock branch (pictured above). The Coats Anchor prize was won by the Embroiderers? Guild. Llinos Spriggs thanked the mayor for the support given to the festival by the town council.
