THE traditional skill of the blacksmith was celebrated at Finch Foundry in Sticklepath last Saturday. Blacksmiths from around the country came to the foundry to celebrate St Clement's Day. St Clement is the patron saint of blacksmiths and has been celebrated since the medieval period. Finch Foundry is the sole remaining water-powered forge in the country and dates back to the early 19th century. Having fallen into disrepair, it was brought back to its former glory by the National Trust. Visitors to the event were able to see top craftsmen in action, observe the traditional anvil-firing event and see the water wheels turning.
