THERE were sparkles and sequins and dancing galore at Lydford’s annual Twelfth Night Charity Ball in January.

Nearly 200 people enjoyed dancing to The Skywalkers and were showered with balloons when the clock struck midnight.

The ball is a Lydford tradition, now in its 67th year, that looks set to stay as it becomes more and more popular each year. With fewer opportunities for people to dress up and dance the night away to a live band, the 12th Night Ball brings people from all over to do just that — several committed revellers even travelled from as far away as Portsmouth to attend.

Some said it was the best event so far, with £2,550 being raised for Cancer Research UK.

One of the organisers of the event said: ‘People are so generous every year and we would like to thank everyone who came along and also those who didn’t, but still donated money to the event. It’s a great night, organised by a group of Lydford residents who are determined to keep the tradition going.’

Chairman for the group Roger Cole said: ‘Seeing people enjoying themselves while also raising money for such a worthwhile cause makes for a wonderful evening. We are lucky to have such a talented local band that do a great job of entertaining everyone. You can’t fail to have a good time.’

This year there was a prize for the best-dressed lady, in memory of Pat Martyn, a member of the committee organising the event for 27 years, and this was won by Allison Hatcher from Bere Alston.

Treasurer Linda Cole expressed thanks to everyone who supported the ball.
