Cambridge U18 League Elburton Villa 2 Tavistock Thistles 0 WITH a midweek game away to third-placed Elburton with 40 points this season to look forward to, Thistles managed to get a team out to give them a run for their money. With a change in formation to a more attack- minded set-up, Thistles adapted well and although Elburton had the better chances man of the match Saul Scarry was in spectacular form between the posts. Saul will surely be assured of a great future in football. Pulling off some great saves mixed in with superb handling on crosses he was one of the main reasons Thistles held out until the last 30 seconds of the first half, keeping the scores level until a long ball caught the two centre halves off guard and Elburton took advantage to net the first goal. Jonathon Scarry, and Dave Gibbings had good first half efforts but never really troubled the Elburton keeper. In the second half Thistles had several attempts on goal but the tireless running of J Scarry and Dan Adams up front came to nothing. With around 20 minutes left, Elburton were gifted an opportunity from outside the box by some slack defending which left the Thistles keeper with no hope. Alan Kirby battled in midfield and with James Graham always looking to receive the ball out wide from the keeper, Thistles did string some good work together down the right. Other notable performances came from Mike Blagdon and James Worrel in the centre of defence. Canbridge League U18s Tavistock Thistles 0 Saltash Utd 8 WHAT a difference four days make — this was typical of Thistles' season with indifferent performances week after week, a good performance on Wednesday followed by a poor one four days later. Thistles started well enough and continued to keep a high line and catch Saltash offside on numerous occasions but with a poor ten-minute spell the afternoon was lost as Saltash rattled in four goals, mainly because Thistles lost their shape and a to a point caved in. The half-time talk would not have been something suitable until after the 9pm watershed but things needed to be said and they were. The second half saw some resolve come back and it was a bettter performance with the usual solid performances from Kirby Blagdon, S Scarry and Rob Allum who managed to complete his first game for over a season with no recurrence of his knee injury. For the first time this season in a game including Thistles keeper Scarry he did not get man of the match but it was kept in the family with 16 year old Jonathon Scarry putting in a performance full of running and inspiration with several attempts on goal. l Tavistock Thistles are looking to recruit new players for both the U18 and U16 teams for next season. Anyone who is between the ages of 15 and 17 on or before August 31 2008 would be eligible for either team.
