OKEHAMPTON Primary School has started generating its own electricity from the sun.
The school is now partly generated by 58 solar panels, installed on the roof to power lights, computers and other electrical equipment.
The project, which cost £58,818, will generate an estimated 8,100 units of electricity a year.
It will cut carbon dioxide emissions by almost three-and-a-half tonnes and save hundreds of pounds on energy costs annually.
Eco-school co-ordinator at Okehampton Primary School, Fran Rickwood, said: 'If half our children feel inspired by this project to make a difference to the environment that is really positive.
'We work hard to promote sustainability through our eco watch club and we are really excited about our solar panels, which encourage children not to waste the earth's resources.
'The enthusiasm of the children is wonderful and they are the way forward.'
The project was funded by a grant of £29, 409 from the Government's Low Carbon Buildings Programme, £26,000 from the EDF Energy Green Fund, £3,000 from the school budget and £409 through pupils' fundraising.
A live information board will be fitted in the school's reception area which will show how much electricity the solar panels have generated and how much carbon dioxide is being saved.
Leader of EDF Energy's Programme for Greener Schools, Peter Thorn, said: 'We were delighted to help the school generate renewable energy.
'This school has a strong track record in engaging hundreds of young people to reduce their impact on the environment.
'This solar energy project will build on their success and bring the importance of tackling climate change home to even more young people in the future.'
A team of eco ambassadors at the school take part in a range of green initiatives including recycling, composting, energy monitoring, community litter picks, a walking bus and growing their own food sessions.
The school is also one of a partnership of eleven local primary schools working together on sustainable education initiatives.
