YOUR article reporting Tavistock AFC v Ilfracombe F A Vase match (Times, September 9) said it was the first time in its history Tavistock had played in a national competition.

Your readers and Tavistock AFC officials may like to know that Tavistock AFC played Taunton on September 4, 1948 at Langsford Park in a preliminary round of The Football Association Challenge Cup Cup Competition and won 7-2. Tavistock?s left wing that afternoon was Bill Pengelly of St Anns fame and the Reverend Andrew Beech. Both were among the scorers.

My programme number that afternoon was 301. In the next round Tavistock lost away to Street.
