Fundraising co-ordinator Mike Bull said the amount was very high for a small town and the friendliness shown to collectors was most appreciated.
'The donations were considerably higher than last year and will help the Samaritans to continue their 24-hours-a-day, 365 days a year availability to those who may be suffering a crisis in their lives and who may even be suicidal,' he said.
The Exeter branch of the Samaritans has more than 100 volunteers who man a rota and are available to answer the telephone or to receive personal callers. There are also volunteers who help with fundraising and non-listening duties.
