'FULL support' was promised to local group Taviskate by councillors in Tavistock at their meeting last week.

The group, which is campaigning for a purpose-built skatepark in the town, asked the council to join in partnership with them and recognise the 'significant contribution' a skatepark would make to Tavistock.

Bob Pilbeam, chairman of Taviskate, said the idea of a partnership agreement was suggested at a recent meeting with Community Action for Rural Devon (CARD).

Mr Pilbeam said: 'Taviskate are offering to raise the capital amount required to build a park, which will be designed by its members, and to make a contribution to an annual maintenance fund, say £500 per annum.'

He said West Devon Borough Council is offering to project-manage the building of the park and the Youthwize charity have offered to monitor and evaluate its impact.

'WestDEN are interested in contributing to the landscaping and environment of the park,' said Mr Pilbeam.

Cllr Peter Donkin said he attended the last Taviskate meeting — he felt the skatepark would be a 'very important and useful community project'.

'I would support their proposals,' he said.

Cllr Norma Woodcock said the council had already agreed in principle its 'total support' for the project and had designated an area in Benson's Meadow for the skatepark — but she thought more information about costs would be required.

'I think this is an ideal example of partnership and falls extremely well within our best value principles,' she added.

Cllr Ted Sherrell said he supported the project but said it was 'vital' that maintenance and safety should be the responsibility of the council.

Taviskate is aiming to raise around £40,000 to build the skatepark, which would cater for the thriving group of skateboarders, BMX bikers and in-line skaters who have nowhere to practice their sport in the town at present.

It would include a 'fun-box' with quarter pipe ramps, banked areas and a section for beginners.
