YOUNG skaters in Okehampton have begun raising money to enhance the town?s skate park. A group of eight young men, aged between 14 and 16, have formed Oke Youth Skaters, having identified developments which they feel could improve the skate park. The group, supported by youth workers from West Devon Youth Service, launched their initiative by organising and participating in a sponsored bike ride from Okehampton to Hatherleigh and back. The sponsored ride which took place on Sunday, December 4, raised £50 towards making the changes happen. Oke Youth Skaters expressed thanks to all who sponsored them. The group also thanked Okehampton Cycles for the loan of fluorescent safety vests, and voiced special thanks to town clerk Don Bent and his son, Jody, for supporting the group and cycling with them. The group also thanked Devon County Councillor Christine Marsh for her continued support of the young people and their ideas. Oke Youth Skaters and West Devon Youth Services say they are delighted with the start the project has made and there are more fundraising events planned for the New Year. If any other skaters would like to get involved, or if anyone wishes to show their support please contact Directions on 01837 55444.
