Devon League Whitchurch Wayfarers v Hatherleigh ON a glorious sunny afternoon, Whitchurch First XI entertained in form and high flying, Hatherleigh First XI. With the home skipper losing yet another toss, his team were asked to bat first on a dream of a wicket for any batsman. The Whitchurch side was missing some key players but the team did not let this affect their performance. Hatherleigh got off to a good start when Newton was caught behind for five in the second over. Witcher then joined Credicott at the crease and they soon had the ball disappearing to all parts of the ground as they went on the attack. Witcher finally went for a big hitting 50, of which he hit six monstrous sixes. An excellent partnership by Credicott (28) and Witcher shared a 71 partnership in 16 overs. Daymond made a quick fire 17 for the Wayfarers to keep the momentum going. Barriball (45) and Stokes (10) then shared a 43 partnership which was dominated by the Whitchurch skipper, Barriball, who took a shine to the Hatherleigh bowling especially Tidball who he hit out of the ground on three consecutive balls. Frost (23 not out), ensured Whitchurch passed the 200 mark with some late lusty blows, Whitchurch finishing on 201 for 8. With only two recognised bowlers, Whitchurch had it all to do. The open bowling combination of Lavis and Webb soon had Hatherleigh in trouble as early as the second over. Webb took the wicket of the Hatherleigh captain who could only spoon a swinging delivery to the welcoming hands of Newton at point. Webb was in the thick of the action again when he dived full length to take a stupendous catch at square leg to put the visitors right on the back foot. Two more wickets quickly fell to leave Hatherleigh wobbling, including a stunning run for the draw and only some charitable bowling let the visitors reach 175 for 8. Webb finished with figures 3 for 43 and Whitchurch took 15 points and Hatherleigh 10 points. l This Saturday Whitchurch travel to run away leaders, Dartington & Totnes, hoping to maintain their recent good form.
