Trelawney two Okehampton Columbines Ladies 7 Penzance Ladies Second 3 Okehampton travelled down to Penzance for their last league game. Penzance were the only team to have beaten the ladies this season and Okehampton wanted to win. Okehampton had no substitutes and several players with injuries before the game started so were not over confident. Good preparation before the match meant that the team started well warmed up and working as a team. Okehampton's short, neat passing with lots of support really paid off with lots of dangerous attacks in Penzance's circle. Penzance's goalie was excellent, commanding her circle with confidence and strength, racing right out, flinging herself into the line of fire and preventing attacks that would normally have led to goals. After several frustrated attempts Jo Moppett managed to fight her way past this demon for the ball to trickle in for the first goal. Penzance fought back and Abi Colton at the back played with energy, confidence and panache, supporting Okehampton's attacks and the dangerous breaks made by Penzance. Play was fast and furious but played in good spirit. Play was stopped several times for injuries caused by accidental high ball strikes and body blows through rushes for the ball but no ill feeling developed. At half time the score was 3-1 to Okehampton. They knew they were playing well but also that the score could have been higher with several crosses not quite reached and action on the goal line not quite making it. The pattern continued with good use made of the space among the halves Jane Jones, Alex Collins and Carol Taylor. Jo Moppett made several magnificent runs with the ball, some along the back line to score. A short corner was beautifully taken. Hannah Whiteley made good use of space at right wing and the passing among the forwards and halves gave lots of opportunity. Jo Moppett had now got the measure of the goalie and pulled her out and then flicked the ball around her for her and Okehampton's fifth goal showing superb control. Viv Weatherington scored Okehampton's sixth goal off a good strike from Alex Collins. An attack by Penzance was stopped on the goal line by a back's foot and goalie Sophie Whiteley had no chance with the ensuing penalty flick. Okehampton's push back went from Jo Moppett to Jane Jones, to Viv Weatherington to Jo Moppett to score just seconds before the final whistle. Okehampton had won the league and will go up for the second year in succession.
