THE late May bank holiday weekend saw Okehampton Simmons Bowling Club off on their annual tour, this year to Worthing. Okehampton was joined by friends from Hatherleigh. En route to Worthing the first game was played at Arundell, with the tourists coming out on top, winning three of the six rinks, losing two with the third tying. Saturday the team and their guests visited Brighton before playing the Hove and Kingsway Club on a dry but very blustery day. This time the home team came out on top, winning by 16 to 106, with only the rink of F Crispin, G Down, J Marles and skip C Hutchings winning. Sunday?s game was against Worthing Beechouse where again the home side proved too strong for the combined Okehampton/Hatherleigh players, winning 101 to 142 with only the rink of P Porsher, D Lower, J Tucker and C Hutchings winning. The rink led by N Reeder earned a creditable draw after being 10 shots down with five ends to play. The final game of the tour was at Feniton where a good win, 127 to 97, was gained, and C Hutchings was able to maintain his record by being on a winning rink throughout the tour. This match was followed by a final meal together and the president of Okehampton thanked D Phare and his wife for the work they had put in to organise this enjoyable trip.
