CONGRATULATIONS were given to the 42 children from the Okehampton Learning Community who were presented with their Children's University Silver Awards recently by the deputy mayor and mayoress of West Devon, John and Maggie Sheldon, at a celebration event at the Nicholls Hall in Lydford.

The children received their silver awards in recognition of their participation in extra-curricular activities at Children's University validated learning destinations.

The children from Hatherleigh, Lydford, Okehampton and South Tawton primary schools were treated to a party tea and a visit from Dartmoor Zoo.

The outreach team from Dartmoor Zoo gave two workshops and brought along some animals for the children to meet, including geckos, snakes and giant African snails.

Representatives from the Devon Children's University also attended and spoke to the children about the benefits that extra-curricular activities can have when applying for university and also in developing career aspirations.

Jessica Goss, from Plymouth University, acknowledged the huge role played by parents in helping their children participate in activities as well as congratulating the children on their achievement.
