VISITORS to Tavistock will now have no difficulty finding the town's tourist information office, following an agreement reached between the town and borough councils.

Last month, the borough's tourism officer, Nadine Trout, approached the town council to gauge its views on the use of a 7ft high bright blue upright sign, which could be put out on Bedford Square to advertise the TIC.

Ms Trout said that since the office had moved into the Court Gate premises, feedback had revealed that people were having difficulty locating it, as it was tucked away beneath the archway.

Town councillors were very unhappy with the blue sign which they felt was ugly and out of keeping in the centre of the town's conservation area — but now a happy compromise has been met.

Town clerk Roger Howard said: 'Nadine has come up with a new proposal. There are two concrete posts in the archway, and both are going to be used.

'One will have a museum sign painted on it, and the other will have the 'i' for the tourist information office.

'There's also a rusty medieval nail sticking out half way along the archway and that will have an "i" hanging off it as well.

'The conservation officer was at the meeting and he was delighted, English Heritage were there and they were very happy,' said Col Howard.

Members were pleased that a satisfactory outcome had been reached.
