IS it correct to use tax payers’ money to support an ailing business?

I read with interest the draft minutes of a recent meeting of Exbourne with Jacobstowe Parish Council. Councillors have now bowed to demands from The Burrow for a grant to fund an employee. When this community shop idea first erupted it was to be run by volunteers.

In 2008 WDBC’s Environment and Community Committee was told that there were 70 volunteers to rotate duties in the shop.  If there are so many volunteers what need is there to pay someone a wage?

At the same meeting the committee was told by enthusiasts that the new shop had a wonderful business plan and that after three years, profits would be shared for the benefit of the parish.

I fear councillors have set a precedent and more will be requested in the future. History shows that unsustainable businesses have closed or can they now go to the council for a grant?
