TAVISTOCK Short Mat Bowling Club held their annual open tournament in Tavistock College gymnasium on Saturday, and ended the day collecting the silverware themselves. The Tavistock squad ended with eleven points and an overall 84-47 shot score-line, after winning five of their seven matches, drawing one and losing one. Runners-up were Ivybridge with a final score of ten points and a +19 shots score-line. The tournament involved eight short mat clubs: Tavistock, Phoenix, Ivybridge, Buckland Monachorum, Bow, Tothill, Saltash and Kensey Vale. All the clubs had a squad of seven players from which they selected four to play in each match, with all teams having to face each other to decide the overall champion. The Tavistock squad were Shirley and George Blackburn, Marlene Paramor, Bill Ashe, Vic Stacey and Ann and David Summers. The seven Tavistock match results were: v Phoenix lost 4-8; v Ivybridge won 16-9; v Buckland Monachorum won 13-3; v Bow won 15-3; v Tothill won 10-8; v Saltash drew 9-9; v Kensey Vale won 17-7. The tournament was organised and run by Tavistock members Clifford and Dorice Hicks and tournament umpire was Alan Jones from Callington. The afternoon ended with a raffle thanks to generous sponsorshop by many of Tavistock?s local tradespeople.
