MOTHER and son Shirley and David Williams have won Yelverton Tennis Club?s mixed doubles autumn tournament event. Shirley and David played husband and wife Phil and Karen Gasche in the final at the club, in Meavy Lane, Yelverton, on Friday week. The final saw a good standard of tennis with spectators enjoying a competitive event from two evenly-matched pairs. Shirley and David eventually won 6-4, 6-4. The tournament, which started on September 1, saw 12 pairs enter, playing matches throughout the month to get to the final. Shirley and David took home an engraved trophy for their efforts. Tournament organiser Phil Gasche said: ?The event attracted a good cross section of players from the club and there were many excellent matches played, providing both social and competitive tennis.? Yelverton Tennis Club is currently fundraising to install floodlights so that its Wednesday and Friday evening club sessions, and other events, can continue throughout the year, despite the darker evenings.
