wildlife artist Robin Armstrong has painted a magical white hare for his young friend Seth Lakeman, to mark the folk star?s new single. The painting is one of 70 new works that will feature in Robin?s latest one-man exhibition, being held at the Garden House, Buckland Monachorum, between October 15 and 22. It will be opened by BBC TV presenter ? and former Tavistock girl ? Angela Rippon. Seth?s recent CD , ?Freedom Fields?, has already reached 32 in the national album chart, following his Mercury Award-acclaimed ?Kitty Jay?. The release of his second single, ?The White Hare? is expected to push the album further up the charts. The song is based on a West Country legend which says the spirit of a deserted girl roams the moors in the form of a white hare ? if you catch its eye she steals your soul away. ?It was the perfect inspiration for a painting,? said Robin, 59, who is one of the UK?s best-known wildlife artists. He has known Seth, 29, and his family for the past 25 years as they all live in the Yelverton area. ?I?ve followed his career since he performed with the Lakeman Brothers, then with Equation and Cara Dillon,? said Robin. ?I was thrilled after he shut himself away for a couple of years and emerged with Kitty Jay, which got the national credit it deserved and launched his solo career big-time. ?I have been an artist a long time, but Seth?s recent success has actually re-inspired me. It demonstrates that if you dig deep within yourself you will find something new and what you are looking for.? Robin presented the watercolour to Seth on one of his rare visits to Yelverton recently . Seth , who was ?skint? when he made Kitty Jay for £300, joked: ?Robin wanted to give the painting to me, but I insisted on paying for it. I told him I had actually made a few bob out of music at last. He laughed, because we?ve both been struggling artists in our time.? At the bottom of the painting Robin has delicately written in part of Seth?s lyrics: ?Careful you don?t catch her, Give her right of way, For she will look upon you, Steal your soul away . . . ? Seth?s recent schedule has been hectic. After a summer of music festivals he has just toured Canada with Billy Bragg. But that was cut short so he could fly back to appear live with his band on Sharon Osbourne?s tea-time TV show last week. This week Seth began touring the UK again, including a gig on October 21 at Plymouth University, and he has gigs lined up in Italy and France. He has also been busy filming a pop video to promote the White Hare. Other recent TV appearances by Seth?s band, including elder brother guitarist Sean, include Top of The Pops 2 ? being screened this Saturday, October 7 on BBC2, GMTV?s breakfast show and the Sunday morning Andrew Marr show. Since his last one-man show Robin has moved his studio to Lopwell Dam on the River Tavy. It has inspired him to experiment with new techniques in capturing the kingfishers, otters, egrets, wildfowl and fish that feature in his paintings.
