CADETS, staff, parents and friends of 2312 (Tavistock) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets attended a service of dedication for the new squadron banner on St Peter’s Day (June 29) at the Church of St Peter at Peter Tavy.
The banner was funded by a special legacy left to the Tavistock Branch of the Royal British Legion whose chairman, Chris Smerdon, and other members were in attendance.
The service was led by the Rev Brian Anderson, Plymouth and Cornwall wing chaplain, assisted by the Rev Steve Martin, the squadron chaplain.
Cadets were delighted to hear the RAF March Past played as the organ voluntary to complete the service.
The banner started its journey from the church to Cox Tor, escorted by cadets and staff. On its arrival in Peter Tavy, it joined the squadron’s band cadets to march to the church.
The high sherriff of Devon captain Simon Martin and Mrs Martin attended, together with Tavistock mayor Cllr Anne Johnson and consort Paul Johnson, who are civilian instructors at the unit. The address was given by wing commander Dr Tessa Pestridge RAF (retd).
Once the service was complete, the band cadets played a musical piece followed by drumming. The cadets marched back to the village hall for refreshments and a barbecue with guests, friends and family.
The squadron expressed thanks to everyone involved in making the afternoon a success. Thanks in particular were given to the Rev Steve Martin and the church wardens for allowing the use of the church, the ladies who provided the refreshments and civilian instructor Nathan Turnock for the barbecue.
The squadron will be recruiting new cadets in September as several leave to pursue their careers or go on to university. Cadets can join aged 12 or over, once they are in Year 8 at secondary school. Details can be found on the squadron Facebook page or website 2312squadron.co.uk
