THIS year has seen a huge increase in the number of people needing help to get to their health appointments — thanks to the volunteers of the Tavistock Area Support Services.

TASS has for the last four years been providing a much needed link between, medical centres, hospitals, chiropodists, dentists and others to help local people to be able to get to appointments.

Andy Lyle, TASS's general manager, said: 'Last month our core of drivers covered more than 4,000 miles, helped more than 140 people, making a difference to their quality of life.

'Those who use our service appreciate all the help given to them by the driver and we do have clients who make their appointments around a driver's availability;

Several of those who use the service have said that the volunteer has now become a friend and someone they can rely on.

'Our drivers are the unsung heroes of our community, driving each day to help local people in need of getting to their appointment. For those we take, the volunteer car service is the only way they can get to their appointment.'

TASS is now appealing for more drivers as the service is not able at present to meet the demand.

Andy added: 'We work in all outlying areas around Tavistock, Princetown, Yelverton, Buckland, Horrabridge, Bere Peninsula, Lamerton, Milton Abbot, Lifton, Lewdown, Mary Tavy, Peter Tavy and Tavistock.

'If you can help us and want to know more contact Bernice on 01822 617525 and she will be happy to tell you more.

'Or, if you see a car with an orange volunteer car badge in the window with Tavistock Area Support Services on it, why not just ask the driver, he/she will be able to tell you more and about what a difference they make to people's lives.'
