I HOPE that you can clarify that the (in my opinion, ?spin?) by quoting Mr Kent?s statement (Times, January 16) regarding Britain and the US being the only countries who support war.

The truth is that all United Nations states have agreed UN Resolution 1441, which states that all nations are in agreement if Iraq is in material breach or hampers the inspectors.

The terrorists seem to be making this same statement . All member states are in agreement , not just the UK and US. In fact, France has sent battleships too; as has Australia!

I look forward to the opposite point of view being put. I find this insensitive at the time of possible conflict with Iraq and feel the children and spouses of service personnel need representation too; indeed, support.

THERE can be few more skilled exponents of the art of ?sitting on the fence? than John Burnett MP. In the short interview on the Iraq issue in last week?s Times he talked about the importance of acting within international law and said no military action should be taken unless it has been sanctioned by a further UN resolution.

However, in his next statement which was extremely ambiguous he apparently indicated that even if the US and the UK chose to invade Iraq without these conditions being met he would still give his ?whole-hearted support? to the invading forces.

This crisis has nothing to do with possession of weapons of mass destruction by Iraq. If it was, wouldn?t the possession of a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons by Israel, the Middle East?s most aggressive state and serial breaker of UN resolutions, mean that it would be getting the same treatment as Iraq?

Unlike Mr Burnett, the

majority of people in this country know that George Bush?s real objective is to reinforce US control over Middle Eastern oil supplies to which his country is addicted, like a junkie is to heroin.

A war on Iraq will take the form of an overwhelming bombardment during which thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians will be killed and the forced conscripts who make up the majority of the Iraqi army will be slaughtered. If that happens we can be sure the resulting hatred of the West in the Islamic world will come back to haunt us.
