OKEHAMPTON's league season came to an abrupt end when their last home fixture of the season was abandoned early in the second period. Visiting Falmouth player Tom Spiller was seriously injured in a collision, and after he was taken away by air ambulance the match was called off. In awful conditions Oke began the match playing down the slope and were soon demonstrating their forward power as they spent long periods in the Cornish side's 22. Their only reward from this early pressure was a penalty kicked by centre Luke Honeychurch. The away side tried to move the ball to keep it away from Oke's superior forwards but this tactic was not the wisest as the handling conditions were terrible. They produced numerous fumbles and turnovers, and with the home side's defence also formidable, Oke continued to press and another score was imminent. It arrived after another strong forward drive, the ball was then spread left by the backs, and after passing through several sets of hands, the ball reached left winger Dave Wills who had a simple run in to the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful but the home side were in full control. Another score arrived before half time when full back Matt Dennis followed up his own kick ahead, charged down the defensive return, and ran in to the left of the uprights for another try in what has been a debut season of great promise. The 13-0 scoreline didn't really reflect the home sides grip on the match, as the forwards dominated the scrum and lineout areas and more points seemed likely in the second period. There had been no major incidents in the second half when the collision occurred and the match was stopped. It seems likely that Oke will be awarded the league points as there will be little time for a replay and both sides remain comfortable in mid table. So the end of a good season for the Okes. They have achieved coach Brett Luxton's pre season ambition of consolidation in the league and have successfully implemented several talented youngsters. Club spokesman Adam Holliday told the Times: 'Next season will be a bigger challenge as Oke look to compete for promotion, and with the seconds having won their merit table and achieving promotion, things are looking very promising for the future.'
