AFTER the closest of wins against Ivybridge in the first round of the Beckly Cup BATs Badminton Club were drawn against Division 2 side Devonshire in the second round of this season?s Plymouth and District Badminton Leagues? Beckly Cup. With every point counting, BATs knew that every point would be counted and as a result none of the pairs ever gave up the fight for more points, even when winning a game had long since been forgotten. Once again it was the pairing of David Williams and Abi Maunder who led the way for BATs by winning five of their six games and winning 89 out of the 90 points available to them. More importantly in two of the games they only allowed the Devonshire pair to get four points giving the BAT?s team even more of an advantage. The second pairing of Jonathon Freeman and Rachael Williams continued to improve throughout the evening ending up with a very creditable 27 points towards the BAT?s total. It was only the second time that Rachael had played with Jonathon in a match situation but the lessons that they had learned from the first round were put to good use as they collected twenty more points than in the last round. It was only Katie McNaughton?s second adult match and once again she was faced with having to play against some of the best players in the Plymouth and District league. Katie was guided through the match by the experienced Alan Berry and they managed to amass 34 hard won points. At the end of the evening the score was BAT?s 152 points and Devonshire 239 with the all important handicap to be revealed. With BAT?s getting the handicap of over 100 points they deservedly ended up the winners and the promise of a semi-final to come.
